What Is Medicare Part A?

In general, Part A covers:

  • Inpatient care in a hospital
  • Skilled nursing facility care
  • Nursing home care (inpatient care in a skilled nursing facility that’s not custodial or long-term care)
  • Hospice care
  • Home health care

Does Medicare Part A Cover It All?

No it does not. Without a secondary insurance plan, you may be subject to large deductibles and out of pocket expenses for an inpatient hospital stay. Below is a look at your costs without a Medicare Advantage Plan or a Medicare Supplement Plan.

You pay this for each benefit period:

  • $1,556 deductible.
  • Days 1–60: $0 coinsurance.
  • Days 61–90: $389 coinsurance per day.
  • Days 91 and beyond: $778 coinsurance per each “lifetime reserve day” after day 90 for each benefit period (up to 60 days over your lifetime).
  • Each day after lifetime reserve days : All costs.
